Mesacol works by reducing the production of certain natural substance that causes inflammation in the colon. The active ingredient Mesalamine is considered an anti-inflammatory aminosalicylates type of medication. Mesacol is used to treat and prevent various symptoms of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis such as rectal bleeding, diarrhea or stomach pain. Some people may also use the medication to treat a condition that causes inflammation of any part of the gastro-intestinal system called Crohn’s disease.

Mesacol should only be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 3 to 4 times daily. The tablets should be taken with some food and a full glass of water or a glass of milk to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Always swallow the tablets whole and not chew, crush or break them to prevent too much of the Mesacol from being released at once.

Always take as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Never change your dosage, start, or stop taking Mesacol unless recommended by your healthcare provider, and always finish the course of medication as you are directed.

Mesacol is to be swallowed whole with a full glass of water, with or without food, normally once per day at the same time. Never chew or crush the tablet as this will render the medication ineffective. It can take up to 3 weeks of use before you see any improvement. If, after this period you cannot see any change or your condition is worsening, inform your health care provider as soon as possible.

Mesacol may cause unwanted side effects such as: indigestion, stomach pain, excessive gas, vomiting, nausea, headaches, diarrhea.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Mesacol is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using Mesacol if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. Mesacol is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
