Donecept

Donecept is prescribed to patients as a treatment for dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. It works by preventing a certain chemical (acetylcholine) from being broken down. This chemical is considered to be vital for maintaining the memory function and is also important for the thinking process. Alzheimer's patients generally have a lower quantity of this chemical present in their brain. By preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, Donecept can help to improve the patient's memory and mental function.

If you have been prescribed Donecept, it is important to strictly follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. In most cases, patients are directed to take it once per day, usually before going to bed. Although Donecept can control Alzheimer's disease, it will not cure it, and you must continue taking it, otherwise it will not be effective. Do not discontinue treatment unless your doctor tells you to.

As with most other medicines, Donecept may cause some side effects, such as: sleep disturbances, loss of weight or appetite, discoloured or bruised skin, scaling, redness or itching of the skin, urinating more often than usual.

If any of the above mentioned side effects become serious or bothersome, you should go and see your doctor. As well as the possible reactions listed above, there is a slight risk of more severe and potentially harmful side effects occurring. You must consult your doctor straight away if you notice pain when urinating, bloody stools, seizures or any other reactions which have not been mentioned here.

Patients who are currently suffering from or who have ever suffered from gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or conditions affecting the heart must inform their doctor before they begin taking this medication.

Your doctor will most likely direct you to limit or avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Donecept.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Donecept as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

Donecept may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you suffer from any allergies, if you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses, if you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription), if you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
