Acivir DT works by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus to allow the immune system to treat the infection. The active ingredient of Acivir DT is Acyclovir. Acyclovir belongs to a class of antiviral medications called synthetic nucleoside analogues. Acivir DT can be used to treat chickenpox, shingles (herpes zoster) and cold sores around the mouth (herpes simplex). Some people may also use Acivir DT to prevent future episodes and treat outbreaks of genital herpes.
Acivir DT should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 2 to 5 times per day for 5 to 10 days as soon as symptoms begin. To prevent an upset stomach, the tablets should be taken with some food along with plenty of fluids throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the treatment. Acivir DT can be used to treat herpes related conditions but cannot be used to cure the herpes virus.
Acivir DT may cause unwanted side effects such as: headaches, fatigue, upset stomach, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea.
Contact a doctor immediately if side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as: easy bruising or bleeding, seizures, speech difficulty, difficulty breathing or swallowing, jaundice, vision problems, irregular heartbeat, mental or mood changes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Acivir DT is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using Acivir DT if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. Acivir DT is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
